![]() In the just wrapped Bareknuckle Bastardsseries, a duke’s abandoned bastards find success and riches on the streets of London. Since then she’s gone on to write many wonderful, award winning books and series including Rules of Scoundrels (starts with A Rogue by Any Other Name) about a group of rebel aristocrats who are princes of the London underworld and the Scandal & Scoundrel series ( starts with A Rogue not Taken) gives a TMZ spin to historical romance. Sarah MacLean burst onto the scene about ten years ago with Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love by Numbers #1) with a voluptuous wallflower who’s ready to grab life by the horns and asks the most notorious rake she knows to be her teacher and partner and much to the surprise of both of them, he accepts. Favorite Malloren titles are Devilish, Winter Fireand The Secret Wedding. Favorite Rogue titles include An Arranged Marriage, Forbidden and The Devil’s Heiress. (an all time favorite). The author also has the Georgian-set Malloren series about a sprawling, complicated aristocratic family and their many adjacent branches (that includes pirates and other untrustworthy rogues)-all ruled over by the Marquess of Rothgar. I love this series so much I wrote a previous blog post about it. In An Unwilling Bride, a son of a duke (or so he thinks!) discovers that he is the illegitimate product of an affair by his mother and he must find and marry the heretofore unknown daughter of his father's affair to save the family line-it will take all of the Rogues to help these opposites fall in love and get hitched. Best of all, they always have to Scooby Gang it to solve a mystery, win the girl and to vanquish both villains and posh society snobs. Her Company of Rogues Regency-set series, about a group of friends who bonded while fighting off bullies in boarding school, is full of complicated romances, dastardly villains, strong-willed heroines that can rescue themselves and rakes with hearts of gold. There was a time in my life when I stopped reading historical romance (what was I thinking?) but it is Jo Beverley that brought back my love of the genre. Most are available as e-books (through SimplyE and/or OverDrive), but you’ll also find e-audio books and of course, hard copies that you can check-out from our grab-and-go library locations. And, because I am indecisive, there are a lot of them. ![]() This list is full of old and new favorite romance books and series and iconic romance authors whose every book Kate and I love. ![]() In romance there's very little fear of spoilers because we know how they end! Unless it's suggested, you can mix and match and read out of order to your heart's content. Just because a book is part of a series does not mean it has to be read in order. If a romance isn’t fun for you (because reading romance should be fun!)-move on - there are plenty to choose from on this list. Kate and I have gathered our favorites, full of our favorite romantic tropes and archetypes but that doesn’t mean they will be to everyone’s taste nor will the love scene descriptions and heat levels be. What brings joy to one reader or escape for another is not always the same. Some of the plot lines and dialogue-not so much. The romance, tropes and character archetypes are timeless. So remember this when reading a romance novel written in the '90s, the early '00s and the mid-20th century (there are two!). ![]() The genre reflects the society of the time it is written. The journey is the who, what, where and why of the story. And, while they are set in a historical time period they're not exactly “historical fiction” and the endings are rarely-if ever-in question. The romance genre is officially defined as having a romantic relationship at the center of the plot and a happy/optimistic HEA (happily ever after) at the end. If you are just dipping back into the historical romance genre or are exploring the genre for the first time, here are some things to keep in mind: We have more sexy, brooding dukes then you will know what to do with (or will you.?), plus a lot of rakes and rogues too-all of whom will ultimately fulfill your every need first, listen to you and validate you (while shirtless!). Our list includes books set in Regency- and Victorian-era England plus, for good measure, Gilded Age New York. Do not be discouraged! Fellow romance reader Kate Fais (and YA Librarian) and I have got you covered. Go ahead and put your name on the lists for all the Bridgerton books you want but, in the meantime, Kate and I have put together a list of books you can enjoy and indulge in while you wait. If you’ve watched the Bridgerton series on Netflix and then gone to NYPL's catalog to look for all the other books in the series by Julia Quinn, you may have noticed something-HOLDS.

Many compliance teams host an annual “Compliance and Ethics Week” to refresh employee awareness, re-engage employees with policies, and get them thinking about ethics in new ways. Not only is a gamified training more fun than traditional compliance activities like training videos or policy attestations, it also engages employees more deeply with your compliance principles, activating their memory centers so they will retain the information for longer. The idea of gamifying your compliance training isn’t new-but it’s stuck around because it works. We must give employees an answer to the question, “What’s in it for me?” Compliance activities and campaign ideas that actually engage employees in compliance Compliance programs must break this cycle by turning compliance push into employee pull. Unfortunately, this leads to employee compliance fatigue and “push-back.” However well-intended and structured, the program often fails to fully achieve the intended and necessary results. Given this, plus another widely-held view that compliance is “done” to employees (“I’ve got to do my compliance training” ), it’s not surprising that companies are striving to make their programs more interesting and memorable with interactive compliance activities, with the result of genuine employee engagement and long-term learning and knowledge retention. If it has two bonds and two lone pairs, as in water, it will have a formal charge of zero. All three patterns of oxygen fulfill the octet rule. Other arrangements are oxygen with 1 bond and 3 lone pairs, that has a -1 formal charge, and oxygen with 3 bonds and 1 lone pair that has a formal charge of +1. The common arrangement of oxygen that has a formal charge of zero is when the oxygen atom has 2 bonds and 2 lone pairs. As a rule, though, all hydrogen atoms in organic molecules have one bond, and no formal charge. Nonetheless, the idea of a proton will be very important when we discuss acid-base chemistry, and the idea of a hydride ion will become very important much later in the book when we discuss organic oxidation and reduction reactions. Because this book concentrates on organic chemistry as applied to living things, however, we will not be seeing ‘naked’ protons and hydrides as such, because they are too reactive to be present in that form in aqueous solution. The hydrogen radical is a hydrogen atom with no bonds, a single unpaired electron and a formal charge of 0. The hydride ion is a is a hydrogen with no bonds, a pair of electrons, and a formal charge of -1. The proton is a hydrogen with no bonds and no lone pairs and a formal charge of +1. The exceptions to this rule are the proton, H +, the hydride ion, H -, and the hydrogen radical, H. The common bonding pattern for hydrogen is easy: hydrogen atoms in organic molecules typically have only one bond, no unpaired electrons and a formal charge of zero. More importantly, you will need, before you progress much further in your study of organic chemistry, to simply recognize these patterns (and the patterns described below for other atoms) and be able to identify carbons that bear positive and negative formal charges by a quick inspection. You should certainly use the methods you have learned to check that these formal charges are correct for the examples given above. ![]() You may encounter carbenes in more advanced chemistry courses, but they will not be discussed any further in this book. Carbenes are a highly reactive species, in which a carbon atom has two bonds and one lone pair of electrons, giving it a formal charge of zero. Carbon radicals have 7 valence electrons and a formal charge of zero. ![]() A carbon radical has three bonds and a single, unpaired electron. Two other possibilities are carbpon radicals and carbenes, both of which have a formal charge of zero. Carbanions have 8 valence electrons and a formal charge of -1. Carbanions occur when the carbon atom has three bonds plus one lone pair of electrons. ![]() Carbocations have only 6 valence electrons and a formal charge of +1. Carbocations occur when a carbon has only three bonds and no lone pairs of electrons. Later in this chapter and throughout this book are examples of organic ions called ‘carbocations’ and carbanions’, in which a carbon atom has a positive or negative formal charge, respectively. In other words, carbon is tetravalent, meaning that it commonly forms four bonds.Ĭarbon is tetravalent in most organic molecules, but there are exceptions. And each carbon atom has a formal charge of zero. In the structures of methane, methanol, ethane, ethene, and ethyne, there are four bonds to the carbon atom. ![]() The formal charge of each atom in a molecule can be calculated using the following equation:Ĭarbon, the most important element for organic chemists.
Make sure you paint over it so it matches the other doors in your home. The good news is that replacing a light-weight door with a solid-core model is easy and affordable. Interior doors are usually hollow core-easy enough to break through for a determined intruder. The door – Here’s your one clear point of entry and the biggest weakness in any safe room. Room suggestions – Storage rooms, walk-in closets, under-staircase areas, wine cellars, or basements can all make good safe rooms. Ventilation – If you can, make sure your safe room has a vent that can be opened or closed for fresh air. It’s gotten surprisingly affordable in the last few years. Concrete board is cheaper still but might require some help from a professional to install. Ballistic fiberglass can be attached to existing walls and is a more cost-effective option, but still requires a budget well north of $1,000. If that’s not an option, you can price out armored steel panels-fair warning, they’re expensive. Many basement walls are made of concrete, so look there first if you have one. In July and August of 2020, members of the Travel Channel’s TV show Expedition Bigfoot filmed their second season in Kentucky. Thousands of people flock to these festivals each year – driving tourism dollars to the rural communities that otherwise might not be able to compete against larger cities. Now, small towns in California, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, to name a few, hold Bigfoot festivals – hoping to use the creature’s unproven existence as a draw for Bigfoot fans and fanatics. The Patterson Gimlin film catapulted Bigfoot into pop culture. The roughly minute long film shows a large creature, fully covered in hair, walking away from them into the forest. In 1967, Roger Patterson and Robert “‘Bob” Gimlin were walking alongside Bluff Creek, about 25 miles from Orleans, California, when they spotted and subsequently filmed what they said was Bigfoot. According to the magazine Mental Floss, there have been Bigfoot sightings in every state in the country, except Hawaii. There’s the Skunk Ape in Florida, the White Thang in Alabama, the Fouke Monster in Arkansas, Momo in Missouri, and the Wildman of Tennessee. In fact, many states have their own version of Bigfoot. The tales added a sense of mystery to rural and remote areas where people were few, but unrecognized sights and sounds were plenty. Starting in the 1840s though, white men working as miners and loggers in the rural parts of Oregon and Washington started telling tales of giant, hairy creatures that walked upright like humans living in the woods. The tree structures are thought to be an indication of Bigfoot creatures marking off their territory from other Bigfoot creatures. Ronny LeBlanc examines mysterious tree structure found in the Kentucky highlands. In some tales, they’re peaceful in others, they are violent creatures that carry off naughty children.
